- Nest Box Day
Burwash Manor Farm has long been known for
its conservation work, not to mention the fact that it's organic,
with a higher level stewardship in place, so it was the natural
choice for the RSPB
when they were looking for somewhere to host their Nest Box
Day. After the success of their visit last year, they wanted
to come back and spend the day with us again!
Nest Box Day is part of a national scheme by the RSPB
to get people interested in garden birds, and learn ways to
help them. They will be on hand to advise you on ways you
can assist birds and to help you build a Nest Box.
Nest boxes are excellent substitutes for the holes found in
old trees. In young woodlands, and in many parks and gardens,
there may be plenty of food for small birds but nowhere for
hole-nesting birds to nest. Over 30 species of British birds
are known to use nest boxes including tits, sparrows, starlings
and house martins - as well as raptors such as barn owls and
kestrels. In recent years, the fortunes of many birds have
varied. While blue and great tits have prospered, house sparrows
and starlings have seriously declined.
